4 Tips For Setting Up Your Storage Unit

If you need to move some belongings into a storage unit, you want to make sure that the storage unit is ready and prepared for your belongings. There are a few things that you can to do organize and prepare your storage unit for your belongings.

Clean Your Unit Before Moving In

First, it is a good idea to clean your storage unit before you move in. Although the storage unit should be cleaning, cleaning it yourself ensures that it is cleaned to your standards.

You are going to want to use a broom to clean the ceiling. Then, you are going to want to wipe down the walls. An easy way to clean the walls is with a mop. Finally, you are going to want to sweep and mop the floor. Storage units are usually made out of concrete, which makes them easy to clean.

Cover the Floor with Pallets

Second, you are going to want to elevate your belongings so that they are not resting on the floor. This will protect your belongings from water that may accidently leak into your storage unit.

Elevating your belongings will also protect your belongings from leaks. For example, if something in a box leaks, by elevating your boxes, you ensure that other items will not be damaged by any leaking substance. Elevating your belongings will also protect your vehicle from moisture transfer from the floor.

Install Shelving

If you want to make the most use of all the space inside of your storage unit, you may want to install some basic metal wire shelving. This can allow you to safely store multiple boxes in one space without stacking them up on each other. For example, if you have lots of boxes of fragile items, you may not want to stack them all up on top of each other. Instead, install a wire shelf system and stack the boxes on the shelves. This will allow you to make the most use of your space.

Get A Solid Lock

Finally, with most storage units, you are expected to provide your own lock. You are going to want to invest in an all0weather pad lock. An all-weather padlock should not rust or get damaged by exposure to the elements. Make sure that the padlock has short arms, making it difficult or impossible to cut the padlock with bolt cutters. Also, make sure that you change and use a custom combination on the padlock.

If you need to put your belongings in a storage unit, clean the storage unit before you move in. Put pallets on the floor to elevate your items off the ground, and install wire shelving to allow you to stack up boxes and make the most of the space that you have. Also, be sure to invest in a solid lock that is difficult to break or remove.
